Direct Sales of Natural Skin Care Products

WAHM Business Start Ups

Handmade SoapI’ve owned and operated my own natural skin care business for a almost 7 years. It has been both challenging and rewarding.

If you plan to create your own business, making your own product, be sure to make a plan beforehand as to exactly how much time you want to be spending, and then allow for more!

If you plan to sell other people’s products, be sure to fully investigate the ingredients used. There are MANY companies who market natural these days based on one or two ingredients, but many of their ingredients are not.

One of the biggest things to look for is scent - do they use essential oils or synthetics (fragrance oils)? This is a always a good indicator as to how committed to “natural” a company is. If they are trying to present the use of synthetics as natural ingredients through misleading wording and labels, this is so pervasive right now… you see it everywhere… run, don’t walk to another company.

The other is preservatives, although it will be very hard to find a company who does not use synthetic preservatives, in a mass production environment they are a necessity.

If you want to market truly natural products, a happy alternative may be to seek out someone else who has their own home business creating natural products and sell for them.

Many of them use a paraben free preservative, still synthetic, it is a safer alternative to some of the heavy hitters contained in many off the shelf products, designed to keep for years.

You will need to do some research, and possibly approach them with a well thought out plan as to what you want, and what you can do for the company.

Many are single proprietors and don’t have a program in place, you may need to have some solutions ready, especially around the holidays. The potential for a lucrative sales period is large, but it is also unbelievably busy, so you need to be prepared.

Be sure that the company is reliable, ethical and check out their product by ordering from them first. Check customer service, packaging, speed of delivery etc to see what your customers will be recieving.

And be sure that they are a pleasure to work with and have an interest in your feedback as to what the customers you are in contact with have to say and marketing suggestions that you may have based on your experiences selling their products. While you may not always be accomidated, an open mind and willingness to focus some effort on the market will result in a bigger chance of your success… and theirs.

You may need to work groundfloor with them and almost certainly be working for a commission, but there will be even more reward in marketing a truly natural product, and in helping another work at home mom to create a successful business.

I agree with you on the part of natural products.

Many companies today says claim that their product is “natural” just because they have a small percentage of natural ingredients.

For people out there who wants to buy “real natural” products look out for the word “100% natural” and not “natural”.

  4. acne skin treatment Says:

I know exactly what you mean - “natural” doesn’t necessarily mean natural or organic. I have actually created an acne skin treatment product - and yes, it’s actually natural made of organic ingredients. http://www.o-eco.com

So what exactly does natural mean? It’s so naughty to hoodwink people like that.

I remember McDonalds in Australia got in trouble a few years ago. There burgers were made with “100% Australian Beef” Sounds great - Trouble was, their supplier, a company based in Asia somewhere, was called “100% Australian Beef” - Not much Australian about that!

    How naughty!
