Basically, I think in order to charge for information, an author should be willing to go the extra mile to provide value - to make the information usable or something of value if used - to step up from theory to utility - although the responsibility will always ultimately rest on the user to use it of course.

And that is the question everyone needs to ask before they buy - will I have the time and dedication to USE it? Do I NEED it?

And that's were ethics in marketing come in, in my opinion - pulling on heartstrings, zeroing in on a persons weakness or insecurity, or hopes and dreams, convincing people that they need things that they don't or won't/can't use just to make a sale is not cool IMHO.

But the best feeling in the world comes when you know you have provided a life altering product that really can make a difference in helping your buyer. Having a mission statement can really help to stay on track in this dept.

As for website content, I think it does depend on what kind of website that you have as to how much of it needs to be written by you, but if you are trying to build a brand and have a personal touch - definitely, the more hands on you can be the better.

In my own journey with my blogs, I find that I can improve what I offer through providing content from others, but I try to include an introduction with that content as well.

And again, the gold standard is how useful is the content. Putting up junk just to have some quick content is a waste of everyone's time and just adds to the internet noise pollution - and guarantees a quick click out - so what is the point (actually, I suspect it is used as a strategy to sell adsense - put up a junk site knowing people will be clicking out - using the adsense ad)

Is this ethical? I don't really know. If a person finds what they are looking for through the adsense ad, maybe it's not so bad. Personally, I almost always don't even look at the ads though and consider it a waste of my time. I wouldn't support this type of website. There is no heart in it.

And on a larger note, that is what the world needs now, especially on an impersonal medium such as the internet - which of course can also be personal, it's all in what you make it :0)

I would like to add that while making your own products is very interesting and a passion for some, if you don't have your heart in it, it's A LOT of work (even if you do have your heart in it!)

There is a lot to learn about product, ingredients, regulations (there are more and more everyday), insurance costs etc. and that doesn't even include perfecting your recipes.

It's not a decision to take lightly, but it can be extremely rewarding and enjoyable if you have a passion for it.

My advice is to start simple. Pinpoint an item group that you would like to offer (bath salts, soaks, bombs etc have a good markup price, are fun and easy to make - and they sell well in my experience) The nice thing about it is that they are fairly inexpensive so could be a good place to start experimenting and doing market research.

Get in on some craft sales etc and talk to people, find out what they want, get them on your list and go from there.

Home parties I think have a great earning potential.

And of course, a website that you can use as on online brochure, reorder and selling tool is essential.

I will talk more about this on my blog at http://www.skincarenaturals.com/natural-skin-care-blog

Be sure to pop in and ask any questions you may have.

@River Girl - I agree! Another thing that I am going to do this week - unplug! Not for the solid week but I'm taking the pressure off. The kids are going back to school next week and I am feeling the need for some down time, while I focus on them and cleaning up loose ends to go full out in Sept - Dec.

Sometimes you just know when you need a break and a bit of down time does wonders.

@Ryan - I love that quote - it is well worth remembering! I don't know if I caught that report or not. I do like Rich, he's got a lot of good things to say, but I admit, part of my strategy has been to increase my focus on doing so I have cut my newsletters down to the absolute bare bones - and still working on it - so I don't get his newsletter anymore. This way I can do exactly what you're talking about - spend more time on output - with a clearer mind.

Excellent post .

My favorite -> "Easy is trying the latest, newest strategy but not quite getting it in place, because easy is also being scattered, spread too thin and distracted onto the next latest and newest stategy."

Many times people got hooked into the "latest" strategies that actually most of them are similar to the one they are using.

I once heard before one person said, for every 1 hour you spent learning, spent the other 99 hours doing. Rich schefren has a great FREE ebook on this topic.

Ya I do agree that FREE information should be available everywhere. It's absurd that you see an ebook with a nice cover charging $40 when you can easily get the same information free everywhere.

To add on, creating information can show your personality. Internet users today are smart, they can tell from a "user-generated" content from content written of you.

Many people don't really know what medical transcription is or have many questions about the profession. They are medical professionals who convert voice-recorded reports as dictated by physicians and/or other healthcare professionals into text format. It's a great field. What does the future hold for this profession? That depends on advancements in technology, practice workflow and various state and federal regulations.
