Get Organized for Christmas

As I’ve been going along, getting ready for Christmas this year, I’ve been making a point of keeping decluttering high on my list.

It’s always important, but nothing spoils the effect of a nice Christmas display faster than a lump of clutter.

Some of it is stuff that has been there too long, some of it is the clutter that seems to regenerate itself, one reason why it’s so important to declutter on a regular schedule – like daily!

MAKING ROOM FOR NEW STUFF

It’s also a really good idea to keep in mind that there may be an influx of ‘stuff’ on Christmas day. This is a great time to get rid of things the kids (or yourself) don’t use, have worn out or have unneeded doubles of.

A BALANCED APPROACH

So while you are getting your Christmas decorations ready, be sure to have a balanced approach and keep a fresh eye out for clutter or anything that can ruin the effect of your nice decorations.

While you’re doing this remember these 2 simple rules.

2 SIMPLE RULES

Single Handle – don’t keep anything to decide on later. Decide now and get rid of it once and for all if it’s something you don’t really want or use. Decide which is more important – clear spaces and less maintenance or the item you are looking at.

Create a Home – If the item you are putting away doesn’t have a permanent home, create one. Not having a place to put things is one of the biggest reasons for clutter, next to keeping things we don’t want or need – and not picking up after ourselves.

Even though the holidays may seem a stressful time, this is also a time that you can really use to your advantage to make great strides in creating a home for your family – all year long.

READY FOR THE HOLIDAYS

I’ve been focusing on doing one Christmas improvement per day, and decluttering or cleaning up one thing. Sometimes they are related, sometimes they are just something to get out of the way either for Christmas day when we are having Christmas at our house or just for ourselves all year long.

It’s been really fun for the kids, many days I do it before they get up so they can be surprised. We did the tree last night, that was a bigger thing that was nice to get done. I love sitting in the living room with only the tree lights on over Christmas.

It’s possibly my favourite thing about Christmas!
