scatterbrain syndrome - what to do
Is It Just Me, Or Is It Crowded In Here?

Do you ever feel like a hopeless scatter brain? I do!

Some days I just can’t seem to keep it together. What to do?

This is what I do.

BREATHE

It is amazing what a few deep breaths will do for a persons state of mind – and body.

Come to a full stop

empty your mind for a minute

and take a few deep breaths.

You will immediately feel a sense of calm through your whole body.

You might even find yourself yawning.

That’s it. Well there is one more thing to do from there.

Identify your next action.

What is it that you were trying to do before SBS set in?

Can’t remember?

Don’t worry about it. It will come to you when you are doing something else.

If it doesn’t, you probably didn’t need to do it anyway (or it’s too late now!)

WHAT’S NAGGING YOU?

That is always the question.

Many times SBS sets in when there is something causing you stress that you are trying to put off or avoid for some reason. Here is a great little video with a few quick but practical tips on reducing stress by reducing clutter by John Tesh at Discover Organization.

  • Maybe you don’t want to do it but ironically, it’s more painful to avoid and dread doing so your brain goes awol.
  • Maybe you want to do it, and that’s why you’re putting it off. Go figure! Actually I wrote about that very thing. It’s one of those things that falls in the strange but true, time to move on to better things category.
  • Maybe you just have too many things going on. The thing is, you’re only human (even if you’re a mom) so pick the first thing that you CAN do and get to it.

SBS is most common when you are resisting something. In most cases, it’s no use. May as well face it, do it or dump it and move on – with a clear head.

Don’t forget these tips the next time you feel a round of SBS coming on.
