And you thought it was your 2 14 year old daughterKiss.

Over the years of having varying degrees of success in keeping my home organized, a place I thrive in, I have found that it comes down to one thing, what I call the S word.

SELF DISCIPLINE.

Personally, I don’t excel in that area.

I am a strong starter dreamer, I could spend days planning and scheming about how good things were going to be, I could make charts and worksheets and post them all over the house, but after a week or two, I’d falter.

I’d suddenly look up and shebang, the house was a disaster again – and that was always just about the time the doorbell would ring. It seems to be an unwritten law.

But when I have had success, it really hasn’t been so much in the planning.

Yes, you do need to know what to do. But in reality, you already have a good idea. If you are struggling, it will be those things that you already know you should be doing, the things that are staring you in the face. Undone.

It took me very little time to create my BOOST CIRCUIT, my saving grace. The one piece of paper that comes through for me EVERY TIME.

But the trick is in DOING IT. TAKING ACTION. EVERY DAY.

Your daily routine will ultimately become the sum of your lifetime. (sounds deep, but hey… it’s New Year’s Day)

And it really isn’t even that hard. It’s the exact same principle for any success I have had in any area of my life.

I used it to loose 10 stubborn pounds, I use it when my business is running tip top.

ACTION PLAN

1. Create a daily routine. Small 5 – 10 minute tasks that will form your BOOST Circuit – it should take no more than 1/2 hour to 45 minutes to do. These tasks could be called the CORE tasks, things that if done everyday, even a for just a few minutes, will see huge results. The 20 part of the 80/20 rule.

2. Create a time pocket to do it in. If you are a mom with small children it will be a challenge to make this time pocket a solid time everyday so make it what I like to call a floating time slot. Make it when you have the most chance of being uninterrupted… when the kids go for a nap, when they watch their favourite show, before they get up, when you have someone else in the house to look after them etc. It is easier this way to create a habit. Once you have done this, you will be almost auto pilot. At that point, it’s a piece of cake.

3. Create an unbreakable agreement with yourself that you WILL spend your allotted time slot doing your routine, or what I prefer to call your BOOST CIRCUIT. And this is the hardest part. That S word again. But you CAN do it. You just need to decide and make it a priority.

If you take it seriously, this information can change your life. I guarantee it. If it means doing it before you go to bed because you didn’t get it finished, then so be it. But I can tell you, after that happens a few times, you’ll do it earlier Glurps.

That is really all there is to it.

You can repeat this procedure in any area of your life. The only thing is to be sure not to over do the number of BOOST Circuits you are working with or you will not be able to keep up with yourself and that will lead to burn out, disappointment, boredom and failure.

Choose wisely. Start slowly. Create one and see how well it works for you, then go on to the next.

You might enjoy this list of things to add to your daily routine. They won’t take much time, for the most part they are basic mindsets and principles that will guarantee you to create a life in keeping with your inner self. Some of these are very easily forgotten until you wake up one morning and see that you wish you had remembered. Highly recommended – a quick read with far reaching benefit.

  1. Hi Cindy and Karen!

When my kids were little and I need a “major float”, I set up my day in something like a pie graph so that I could choose at a glance what activity best suited the commotion of the moment :0)

I liked it, now I use a series of boxes to form a square – I think there are 12 – 4 rows of 3. I’m very visual I guess, but it works for me. Each box holds a task, some I do every day, some every other. This way I really don’t have to plan every day, at least for that core circuit, it’s already planned, I just check it off as I do it and then rub it out for the next day using a dry erase marker and sheet protector.

That is part of the reason it works for me too, very little thinking goes into it, I can “just do it”, once I start, and commit to about 1/2 hour or so depending, it basically does itself.

  2. Hi Myrna, I’m sure that you will do great with it! Let us know if you have any questions or challenges, I’d love to hear how you make out with it. Happy New Year!

  3. Glad you like it! Let us know what boost circuit you decide to create.

    It would be really interesting.

All the best in the New Year!

  4. The past few days, I’m starting a habit of making a to do list and check it out often during the day…
It’s one boost circuit I’ll start with, in the morning, and think of to-do list to be done that day…

All the best to u too, Jan!
Thanks for sharing this great insight!

  5. Good point to do a little each day instead of letting it all pile up on you, that’s what Flylady teaches, too. I tend to want to get everything done at once, and there’s just not enough time for that…I have to remind myself to work on it a bit each day. 😉

  6. Thank you for this post. I am 25 years old and believe I am suffering from self defeat and self destructive tendacies. I have not had a normal stable daily routine for the better part of theblast 6 years. I have depleted myself through alcohol relationships marijuanna insomnia phzicolyt behaviour. I recently started reading again which is somewhat crazy since I have read but now it seems the consciousness is receptive and not blank etc. I will attempt to incorporate this into my life since I believe that a routine maybe the only thing that saves me. I do not even have the habit of brusshing my teeth or showering as soon as I wake up daily. I will get dressed per occasion and remain in my pjs all day. I constantly begin projects but never deliver.

  7. I know this is old ols, but this is something I’ve never been able to accomplish, maybe because I don’t have small kids to push me to being “good” or something. half the time I can’t drag myself out of bed to even brush my teeth at night. Or in the morning. Showing daily is even a struggle and one I often lose. Dishes are to be done when the entire sink is full. etc etc. How do you build self-discipline?

    1. The best way that I have found to build self discipline is to start small and work up. It becomes easier and easier as it becomes a habit but it is a large step to get started, so chunking it down helps.
Often we make a ‘mountain out of a mole hill’ in our mind and that keeps us from even starting.
Just choose one thing to start with – you can make it your daily shower – that is something that will make you feel better as well. Add to that.
I have found that spending a little time on myself every day has completely changed my outlook, my energy and my self esteem.
If you can, make an appointment with the hairdresser to get your hair done (you could make that your one week reward) – what ever it needs (mine is quite grey and was making me look and feel dragged out so I got highlights – best thing I’ve done for awhile!) and I got a more stylish cut too. Love it and I feel so much better.
The small things really do add up.
I’m glad that you asked, I will look at that question closer.
Stay in touch, let us know how you do.

  8. I really love your site.. Pleasant colors & theme. Did you make this amazing site yourself?

Please reply back as I’m looking to create my very own
site and want to find out where you got this from or just
what the theme is called. Appreciate it!

  9. “All of us wish to reduce the negative influences of items on the natural environment via growing their reuse and recycling.
Its key element is that achieve clothes recycling an easy component of lifestyle,” claimed Mattias Wallander, leader from USAgain. “Textile recycling services are receiving focus
with municipalities which has a goal to enhance the complete waste disruption ranks
and we’re also working hard to support with their goal”.
