Who would have thought that finding out how to make a homemade, non plastic shower curtain could make my day?

This morning when I tuned into my google page I saw an interesting post called Homemade Shower Curtain under the blog RSS feed for Busy Feet Running & Digging. Who wouldn’t RSS that, brings back so many memories of some of the best times of my life – not necessarily when I had little feet running and digging – but certainly when my kids did. I miss those days!

But I digress.

This post is not about how precious and purely magical little children are, and how we don’t always appreciate that unconditional love, those belly laughs and that soft baby smell (it’s not always bad!) until they grow, but about making a homemade shower curtain instead of buying one from the store.

And how it never occurred to me. Sometimes I’m not too swift!

I have contemplated how I could do it.

But I never got past the waterproofing.

How do you do that?

Guess what?

YOU DON’T HAVE TO!

You can just use regular material. Who would have thought?

I’ve got a whole trunk of material. I’m sure that I can find something.

I just gave a whole box of sheets away.

I probably could have used some of those too!

DO IT ON THE CHEAP

If you don’t have material on hand, you can do a few things.

  • Go to your local Sally Anne. ‘New To You’ places have almost always got sheets, material, curtains – lots of stuff that you can use for your shower curtain.
  • Buy some sheets on sale. If you keep watch and wait for a sale, you can get them at a good price. If you have kids, you can something fun in the children’s department.
  • Ask your friends. Lots of people have material lying around or sheets that they don’t use.
  • Make it patchwork. If you’re really stuck, you don’t necessarily need to do it with a full sheet of material. You can patch it together using pieces of material that you have. You may want to do this even if you have full sheets.

We have a small shower so I don’t even have a big challenge in covering a large space. It’s kind of disappointing, there are so many possibilities in making a full size tub shower curtain.

I can say that I think using a light material could have some advantages over using a plastic shower curtain, besides the obvious of cutting down on the use of plastic, the toxic fumes of new plastic and the fact that it won’t pull off of the shower hooks. And if it does you can easily fix it.

There are a few more.

I’m thinking that there will be less water dripping on the floor.

  • In our shower, it easily pokes outside of the shower, so the water sometimes runs off the shower curtain and onto the floor. A material shower curtain will absorb some of the water and then it will simply dry by itself, since it’s hanging up.
  • Easy to wash. I’m thinking that a regular material shower curtain will be easier to wash than wrestling with a plastic shower curtain with slime on it.
  • You can really have some fun with holidays and occasions by making a special shower curtain for Christmas, Halloween etc. The kids will love it.

I’ve been wanting to haul out ye old sewing machine for awhile. This will be the perfect project, to replace my shower curtain that has seen better days.

Saying goodbye to plastic and looking forward to something better.
