My Fridge Horror Story

My fridge is also a challenge for me, since I started planning meals, it has been easier, but it still falls through the cracks sometimes.

My husband is gone away to work quite a lot, then home for a week or two at a time. During one of his “home times” I had bought a bottle of juice that I use to perk up my water bottle but I didn’t realize that it was sweetened with aspartame.

Not only do I not like to drink it, I really don’t like the taste of it, so I told everyone to drink that one and then forgot about it (they don’t mind it and I didn’t think one bottle between them all would hurt).

Wouldn’t you know it, it gets shuffled to the back of the fridge and left there, can you guess what is coming?

He goes to work for 2 weeks, comes home and makes smoothies.  We drink them.

My son comes home from work. Is thirsty. Husband says, finish up this juice. He takes the bottle, preparing to drink and says, hey, there’s something in there.

Upon further examination we find a little chunk of mold in the juice.

I say, I’m glad you looked and didn’t drink that. My husband then tells me, yeah - but we just did because I put some in the smoothie.

Insert moans and gagging noises and son’s evil laughter :0)

Lesson 1 - Don’t rely on anyone to figure that if the juice container has been in the fridge for over 2 weeks that there is a good chance it is no good any more!

Lesson 2 - Do a regular clean out of your fridge, because you can’t rely on anyone to figure that if the juice container has been in the fridge for over 2 weeks that there is a good chance it is no good any more!

Lesson 3 - If you want someone to finish something in the fridge, remind them often before it’s too late and check it yourself.

Lesson 4 - If you drink my husband’s smoothies (or eat his cooking) get a complete inventory of what went into it, he’s a user upper!

As gross as this story is, the real lesson is that eating mold isn’t healthy! Someone could have gotten seriously ill.

Cleaning your fridge, even a quick clean out really is a health issue (I read somewhere that scientists have suspected mold from inside of fridges from moldy leftovers to be cancer causing as well) .

QUICK TIP: I started doing this and really found it made a difference - every time I put the kettle on for tea or coffee, make it a habit to go to the fridge and do a quick clean up while waiting for it to boil. You could even rotate that on to include your kitchen cupboards after a few coffee’s!

Do you have a fridge horror story? Come on, fess up :0)

We’d love to hear it, you can leave a comment and give us all more incentive to go clean our fridge!
