Summertime Children's Recipes
WARNING: The Summertime Children's Recipes contained on
this site in no way detail how to make children (summertime or otherwise). If you need help on
that you'll have to ask your mom :0)
Summertime is the best time for smoothies and homemade popsicles.

I always sneak in some of these things... silken tofu (you can use the firm also if need be), soy milk, powdered milk, fruit - especially berries and peaches or bananas and peanut butter are good too, EFA oils such as Udo's Oil, Flaxseed, Evening Primrose or something similar from the health food store.
EFA's can't be cooked or they loose their effectiveness and they don't taste great alone so this is the perfect way to get them into your child's diet.
These are very important oils for everyone, they do wonders for keeping steady emotions and also for brain development - I think I'll large size it next time :0)
I just read that ground flax seeds can be used. I had thought that would be rough on the throat, haven't tried it myself yet. They do gel and actually can be used as an egg white substitute so maybe it works? If so it would be a most excellent addition, great fiber source to boot!
Summertime Cool Me Off and Pick Me Uppers - Great for Mom Too!
We always grind up some ice first to add to it, I figure it adds a bit of water and also makes it colder and more refreshing. I do like to add a bit of ice cream, it tastes much better so they guzzle it all down without a thought about what else might be lurking in it :0)
As long as you prep them with blender safety and remind them to clean up after :0) older kids can do this for themselves also.
Popsicles with a Punch!
Another thing that can make good popsicles is cold herb tea with a bit of honey added (sucanet is also supposed to work well and I'd love to try Stevia).
I made some with freshly juiced lemon and lime, it was a great touch. I just had one the other day that was screaming for fresh peach or strawberry juice, mmmm. BTW, did you know that fruits such as peaches and melons are especially good as cancer fighting agents and strawberries are wonderful for your skin and host so many goodies for your health that it's hard to count them all? So get it while you can!!
You can use herb tea to make the cubes for the smoothies too.
We put these in water bottles and put them right in the freezer for car trips or those scorching days. I gave up on buying water bottles because they always get lost, but I have an assortment Gatorade etc bottles to use.
The coolest are the new squeeze ketchup bottles. Squeezable mustard lids will work on them in a pinch too, just make sure they are really clean, mustard will kind of throw the taste!
Rosehip/Hibiscus Tea has comes out a red colour that the kids love and a slight tart taste, great thirst quencher.
Rose Hip Tea is very high in vitamin C, an excellent idea for summertime because it helps reduce sun damage in many ways, such as it's properties as an anti oxidant (sunburns cause free radical activity and the anti oxidants combat this) and it's essential in the growth and repair of tissues and the formation of collagen.

*The Real Vitamin and Mineral Book* by Shari Lieberman and Nancy Bruning even goes on to say that some companies are adding vitamin C to their creams and lotions to prevent free radical damage in the summer sun. I've used the rose hip tea to colour my rose lotion as well, although I only do this for myself as it will reduce shelf life. Rosehip Tea could be an idea for a simple summertime spray as well.
Linden Tea was known in ancient times as Royal Nectar and is said to have some great benefits for children with colds and flu and such as aiding digestion, relaxation and insomnia, it makes a good evening treat on those hot summer nights.

It is a golden colour and has a very mellow flavour that goes well with a bit of honey, it puts me in mind of chamomile but is not as sweet. Apple or citric juices would be a nice addition to this tea in a popsicle or iced drink. Linden Blossom is also used as a soothing bedtime bath tea.
Another great tea you can do for yourself is raspberry leaf if you have any raspberry bushes. It is packed with nutrition, an excellent tea for expectant mothers as well.

It is primarily used (as I recall) to tone the uterus both before and after birth. My midwife made me drink a pot of it as soon as I had my daughter and I drank it regularly throughout my pregnancy. Her delivery was absolutely beautiful and went so fast that I even caught the midwife by surprise!
One thing to remember when using teas as cold refreshments is that they won't keep long in the fridge, my rough guess would be 2 or 3 days tops.
I think I better go have a popsicle break, I'm making myself thirsty :0)
Today's Burning Question: Could someone tell me WHY? Why, I always ask myself when searching for the plastic sticks that go with the popsicle molds, why they don't sell them alone in sets of 100?
