Everyday KAOS

Home Management Tips, Organization, Time Management Tips

Well, today I finally got this travelling thing together.

Another trip to the dentist. Best laid plans. I sat down and thought of everything I had to do before hand, gave myself an extra 5 minutes for each one, giving me lots of time to arrive.
Then about an hour later my daughter came into the room and let me know that she has a volleyball tournament and would like a ride home. Can you spell KAOS?
OK, call the dentist to see if I can get the time changed.

Yes, I can, so we are all set. It is 2 hours later, so that will give me even more time to work before I have to leave.

Until my daughter calls at 10:30, while I am in workmode heaven and tells me that she forgot her shoes, can I bring them by 1:00?

OK, except that I just changed the appointment so now I will have an extra hour or more to fill before my appointment. Oh brother.

So much for my calm departure. Enter total KAOS as I try to cram the “must do’s” into a 2 hour reduced time span since I had to leave early.

Making a dash at a run to the chicken coop to give the poor chickens some water (after their waterer was frozen solid, did I forget to mention that it’s about -20* today?) I stumble into the van to leave, I’m sure that’s my rear end I see pushing by me to get in the door. Get to the school, no one in the office, wander around looking for her, give up, sit in the lobby until she walks by looking for her shoes. Ureka!

The good news? I’m so early for my appointment that I can laugh when the lady in front of me is driving 70km. Hey, I’m getting great gas milage!

Then she turns after only about 5 minutes. I hit every green light, I can drive calmly from the parking lot when there is no spot left and find one in the next lot, no problem! This is what it’s like when you have time to kill. I could never have imagined :0)

I just don’t know, I really don’t. There is a law, a universal law that says everything must revert to KAOS, it is the natural way (order by the way, is not).

I’m just trying to get to the dentist. Just one time - one straight line. HAH!

What’s the moral to the story? It’s something I learned a long time ago about making plans and getting things in order. It’s a delicate thing that falls apart easily and often. But that doesn’t mean that we quit trying. Every single thing that you can do ahead to set yourself up for later is putting one more thing in your favour when things screw up!

It’s true. Try it, you’ll see exactly what I mean.
Start with something small. Like your keys. (I used to regularly tear the house apart for my keys on a regular basis) If you don’t have a place for them by your front door, we have a hook, make one and from now on, it’s the law that anyone who uses them puts them there when they get home. It will be one less coronary down the road. I think mine are on the dishwasher, going to move them right NOW! Do you know where your keys are?
