The Golden Hour of Productivity Time

Mon, Apr 20, 2009

Productivity, Time Management

What if you could improve your productivity for the entire day with a few hours straight off the bat?

Ask yourself?

What do you do when you first get started on your work day?

Input or output?

Do you check things, chat a little, warm up, or do you jump right in?

Sometimes it isn't a matter so much of what we should be doing, or even what we want to be doing, but a result of our first action.

If we open our email first thing, we read it and sometimes reply.

If we open a forum or twitter, we read and sometimes post.

If we open a work file, we work on it.

See the difference?

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

1. Decide what you would see the most results from if you spent the first hour of every work day doing it.

2. When you start up, open the program or file that you need and get right to it before you do anything else.

3. Close it at the alloted time if you are going by time pocket (a specified time that you have set aside to work on it) Or close it when it is finished if you are going by task.

4. If you can, set yourself up for tomorrow so that you can jump right in quickly.

NOTE: You may find that you would like to rotate between a few things. I find that I can pack a bigger punch if I work consistently on one thing first thing, but it suits you better to rotate, go ahead.

Just be sure that you set up a schedule ahead of time and open what you need first thing, what ever it is you are working on.

I've been using this approach to explode my content creation through writing articles.

I start early and set a goal of having 2 finished and published.

I find that as long as I do it first thing it gets done.

If for one reason or the other I put the task aside and promise to do it later it either eats up the whole day or doesn't get done at all.

I first got onto this through Jeff Herring, the Article Guy. I don't think that I've ever been so productive.

Give it a try and see how it goes.

Let me know.

If you spend your first time pocket on writing content, go ahead and post your link so that we can see it!

THINK YOU CAN'T?

BTW, if you think you can't do it, you have to watch this video. Jeff sent it around. The first thing I thought was 'shoot, football!'.

But it gets really good fast.
