Speed of Execution – Faster Is Better

Home Biz Tips, Productivity

Have you seen the movie 'Brave Heart' lately?

The scene I am thinking of in particular is the one at the end where William Wallace (played by Mel Gibson) is executed in an excruciating, torturous way. Made worse of course by the fact that it just goes on and on – being wracked, hung, disemboweled and beheaded can take time!

I love the movie, but that scene never fails to make me squirm.

A movie of course can never recreate exactly the feelings, events and experience of an actual event, but we do know that William Wallace was in fact tortured before being put to death. And I think it's pretty safe to say that he was wishing that it would just be over, as quickly as possible.

Who knows, maybe when he yelled FREEDOM!!!!! with his last gasp, he meant just do it and get it over with!

NOT THAT KIND OF EXECUTION

I thought that scene was a nice illustration of what it can feel like to move slowly in business. Sometimes it is truly excruciating!

Slow to get projects finished. Slow to make sales. Slow to create the vision that you once had.

Slow. That word can also spell a slow death for your business. The kind that you may not see coming. The kind that you just can't put your finger on.

ON THE OTHER HAND

What spells freedom in the work at home world?

SPEED.

The faster the better. You can't skimp on quality (in most places, although perfectionism and too much attention to detail can spell SLOW as well), but in general, the speedier you can complete things, the better for your income funnel.

In other words, the faster you finish the job, the sooner you get paid.

The best way to do this is to focus on one thing at a time, as best you can. If you can finish up a project by assigning two time pockets to it per day, rather than working on 2 things in that time, do that to see the one thing completed, then move on to the other.

ACTION TIPS

  • Just for today, keep speed in mind. See how much faster you can get things done.
  • Think of the end result, not the never ending journey in between. Having your eye on your destination will help you to get there faster.
  • Develop a sense of urgency in your project plan. Create deadlines, a step by step plan of how you will accomplish things and accountability.
  • Keep note of what you accomplish every day. The things that bring you results. Soon you will find yourself focusing on them, just so that you can write them down. The rest will fall by the wayside.
