Productivity Rule #1 – Get Clear

Organization, Productivity, Reviews

Time Management Tools

There are a handful of time management rules that make up the core of being productive and happy.

Things like consistency, having a plan, having a system, a routine, self discipline, organization, blocking time and being focused.

IF I HAD TO CHOOSE ONE THING…

But if I had to choose only one thing out of all of the things that have changed my life in my quest for optimal productivity, it would be to get clear.

To get clear in mind… to get clear of clutter… and to get clear of too many things on my plate.

I used to think that it was just me, with a tendency to take on too much, to find myself scattered in too many directions, waking up one day to find out that there was no possible way for me to actually DO everything that I had lined myself up for.

And I was paying for it… my stress level was through the roof and ironically, even though I lived every day at breakneck speed, I was getting little accomplished.

IT'S BECOME EPIDEMIC

But as I look around and listen, I am finding that it's becoming an epidemic.

With so many great things at our fingertips these days, so many opportunities just waiting for us, it's become very hard to make choices, and our first reaction is to just choose it all.

Unfortunately, we don't realize that in the end, the choice to choose everything becomes in actuality, the choice to choose nothing.

And working at home seems to take this problem and magnify it 100x.

WHAT THE HECK?

It's very easy, in fact it's the norm, to look around and find yourself wondering, what the heck?

Do I have a business buried under all these tasks, to do's and new projects somewhere?

  • Where is my business focus?
  • What am I trying to do here?
  • What did I set out to do in the first place?

BUSINESS FOCUS IS THE KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS

Without it, what are you doing, really?

Spinning wheels, taking small steps in many directions, most of them going no where or even worse, in the wrong direction.

The best way to fix the situation is to do some 'spring cleaning', or weeding of anything and everything that isn't working for you and taking you away from your main business objective.

TIME FOR SOME 'SPRING CLEANING'

Let's talk about solutions for a minute.

It can be really hard to make good choices as to what to keep and what to toss.

Not only is the overwhelm caused by too much overflow, for too long sapping our time, it's also sapping our energy and our power to make good choices.

In this state it's easy to become frozen, to lose our perspective on what is a good choice.

At some point, things are so muddled that we just don't know anymore.

It's at this point that often we will continue to run like a gerbil in a cage, not getting anywhere but not quite sure how to get off of this wheel that we set in motion.

Sometimes it takes an outside, objective observer.

If you can get one from someone who has already built her own successful business, all the better.

Of course you know where this is leading, you've seen me talk about Alice before.

I took her Spring Cleaning Coaching a year ago, and I can say that I am still benefiting from it today.

I liked it so much that I even continued on after the session was over.

I liked it so much I kept everything and will be reviewing it all again, many times over the coming years… it was that good.

And as you know, clutter is a never ending battle.

AN AWESOME FREEBIE FROM ALICE – NO STRINGS

Alice sent us her free business planning calendar system this morning.

If you are tired of collecting unread, unused freebies, don't pass this one up.

This is an actionable, usable tool that you can use to improve your situation and your bottom line today.

It will help you to pinpoint what you should be doing.

This will go a long way to keep you from spending time doing things you shouldn't be doing – ie: wasting time.

There are no strings.

You can go to the page and download it, keep it, use it.

Never have to purchase a thing or even sign up for anything at all.

Using it will give you a full outline of very specific tasks that often go lost in all of the 'to do clutter', and it will give you the big picture outlook that you need for the upcoming year.

BUSINESS PLANNING CALENDAR SYSTEM

It's basically a complete system that Alice could have easily put together as a stand alone course on it's own and sold.

Don't skim the instruction sheet, it's where the magic is.

I'm going away for the night and will have a few hours of uninterrupted time.

I will be taking mine with me. Couldn't have timed it better.

You can get yours with no obligation here.

Be sure to scroll to the bottom of the page and you will find a link to lesson number one of Spring Cleaning Coaching, grab that too!

If you do nothing else today, get it.

Alice Seba's Free Business Planning Calendar

This tool alone will help you to see what you need to do, where you need to drop some things and help you to create your focus.

If you are feeling at all overwhelmed… like your business is going in too many directions… feeling scattered… do yourself a favour and nip it in the bud.

It's the single most important thing that you can do for your business, your sanity and your health.

And if you need some help, Alice is your girl.

You can find out exactly what is in her Spring Cleaning Coaching fall session.

Sign ups are open until Sunday, so don't wait.

    Hi,

it´s true, I think the most difficulties I have with working from home is staying focused on what is most important and not getting distracted. One reason I´m always getting distracted is that I doubt my choices of what I´m doing is the right thing and the other one coming towards me at that moment is maybe better or useful at some future time. I just get carried away. Is there a cure to this?

Hi Nirusan, I agree, this seems to be one of the biggest challenges we face in working at home. It may not be so much a home issue as a business management issue, learning how to manage things, choose the most important and effective and stick with them.

That’s one reason that it is so important to weed, we have enough to do without working on stuff that should be gone completely, and to have some experienced guidance.

One thing I’ve found is that the most successful people on the internet seem to have had some business success off line in the work or business world before starting their own online biz. Not to say that anyone can’t start up, in fact it’s the beauty of the internet these days, but there is a learning curve.

Best advice I can think of is to keep it simple.

Work on one major project at a time until it’s finished.

Make a list of the ‘sub projects’ within that project that you ‘could’ work on. (eg. product development, podcast, blog etc)

Create a timeline, choose and schedule what you can realistically do yourself, delegate or delete the rest, even if it means that you won’t be able to do everything on your wish list… a few things done well are better than too many scattered here and there.

Make a rule for yourself not to start anything new until the present project is finished.

This is beautifully illustrated in lesson number one of Outsourcing Weekly, a weekly course that really covers it all – not only outsourcing but what to do etc

Keep anything else in a folder, you can call it a holding folder or as Kelly calls it her warm or cold folder, for anything that you may want to take on later. It will still be there waiting, and meantime you may even find that you don’t need or want to do it anymore. Or you may find it the next best thing to spend your time on.

I’ll be tackling this issue and lots more in the 1,000 Hours Project. Sign up is on the side bar (it may be under Paint by Number Productivity, I am thinking it’s more descriptive). No obligation to buy when it’s ready but meantime, you may find some helpful resources there.
