Do You Have a Money Mindset?

I was getting my daughter’s lunch ready for school this morning and John (Cougar) Mellancamp’s song – Rockin’ In the USA was going through my head – in particular the lines “come from the smaller towns” and “with very little money in our hand”.

It reminded me of me when I was about 18 years old and first moved to the small town I lived in. I didn’t have 2 pennies to rub together and was well entrenched with that mindset. I was living with a friend and her family – her sister and mother who was a welfare mom who did volunteer work at the local Red Cross. I had never seen borderline poverty up close. Bottom line is, I had a “no money mindset”.

My family background included a no money mindset also – even though we actually were doing quite well, my parents operated always gave me the impression that we where poor. I had no encouragement to “think big”, even go to college (something I still regret today) I was making it “big” to find any job at all so spent my early days waitressing and then became a nanny/housekeeper (like I wouldn’t get enough of that later!) It didn’t help that the area I lived in was very beautiful, a tourist region, but dirt poor in the winter months – you either had it or you didn’t.

Sounds bleak! Actually, I managed to have a fun time until I “grew up”, but it makes a stark contrast to the minds of the people I like to study today.

Rich people just do things differently. And I am noticing that a lot of very successful people have had army training and retired from it with a fairly high rank.

Why is this do you think? I think it’s because they are

  • trained very well to plan
  • to be on the offensive
  • to be prepared and to think on their feet
  • to be leaders

It is drilled into them until it has become a part of them.

And they think big.

My husband is a good example. He is not rich, nor did he have an army career. But he makes a good living, although he grew up in this town and did not go to college.

He does have

  • a very healthy self image and confidence in himself and his abilities
  • he not only “hopes” for a good wage and oportunity, he EXPECTS it
  • not only that, he will settle for no less

Is it always easy? No. My mindset in our early years was if you have a job, you are lucky, keep it. He quit jobs because he didn’t think he made enough money or was not appreciated enough.

And it paid off for him. He has built himself multiple skills and careers through hard work and an unwillingless to settle.

He has a success mindset.

So what about the top guys?

That’s where it gets really fascinating. Since their “bottomline” mindset does not include failure or “small things”, they focus only on bigger things. And that’s what they get.

If they don’t get big returns from a task. They don’t do it. Period.

Not only that. A lot of their time is spent learning what to do. There are millions of tricks and methods to wringing the most out of your efforts. To developing what is commonly called a “Millionaire Mindset”.

I still am not in “that” space, but I am certainly seeing that there are methods that anyone in business can use to increase their efficiency as well as their bottomline.

The bottomline on a good bottomline is not diet and excercise, although that helps :0) It is your mindset – what is acceptable and not acceptable in your head becomes your reality, simple as that.

ACTION TIP

Ponder this concept. What is your mindset? What one thing can you put into place that will make you “play like a big boy” (or girl!!)

And what can you take out that is costing you time and money in your business right now?

Can you delegate, hire or get rid of the task completely?
