I found this year to be quite different for me during the traditional goal setting/resolution time.
For many years, New Years Eve has been the time for me to spend quiet reflection on the past and enthusiastic goal planning for the future.
But this year I just didn't have it in me. For two reasons.
The first one is that upon clearing a bunch of paperwork I found a lot of my old written goals.
Many of them were either ongoing or unachieved. Many of them were ongoing and unachieved :0)
The point being that for me at this time in my life, my major goals are consistant and in progress.
I don't need to dissect every little thing.
I simply don't need to do any more looking forward this year. I need to look at what I am doing right now. This minute. Today.
That said, one thing that I am finding a huge need for this year is shedding what no longer serves me or the things that have held me back from the goals and resolutions that I have set for myself in the past.
The ones that still shine brightly after all these years.
In that light I will be spending the next month or two putting into place actions to remove what ever I can. I guess you could call that a resolution.
Some are large, some are small.
The small ones with huge impact are…
- Papers and paperwork and office paraphernalia - I've dumped boxes of it from my office these past weeks with a few more to go. At some point I will walk into my office without looking at anything except what I am doing right now.
- Finances - I am revamping my system to track and keep on top of bills etc. I want to shed late payments and panic attacks for no other reason than I forgot to pay the bill. Also I am consolidating and eliminating accounts so that I no longer have so many to track and look after.
- I'm consolidating some websites and blogs so that I can focus on making a few great instead of many neglected. You may have noticed the new blog design here, it's part of the process.
- Courses etc. I hereby resolve to not order any ebooks or courses until I have fully used what I have - even if I know they are good. Or tools for the future. I will only buy tools that I NEED right now. I am moving from hunting/gathering information to ACTing on what I know.
- Notes - I am eliminating 1000's of little pieces of paper. Notes to myself of things to do… ideas… brainstorms and putting them into a few notebooks. The ones I use often are on my desk - namely my blog idea notebook. The others are in a basket where I can find them. The notes are gone! My brain feels 100lbs lighter already.
LARGE
- I am in the process of weeding out large business projects that no longer interest me so that I can concentrate on my what currently does. Sounds logical but it has been a process years in the making for various reasons. I already feel another 100lbs lighter.
THE BOTTOM LINE
The bottom line for me this year, and maybe for you, is that micromanaging my goals and even the actions to acheive them has become a waste of time for me. It's the same old, same old.
This year my only resolution is to get rid of anything that is holding me back, focus on what I know works, and to go forward with focused ACTION on the things that are always in the forfront of my mind - those things are…
1. My Queen of KAOS membership and products. Some of you know that they have been in the works (meaning pushed to the corners of my computer) for years.
2. Health and Fitness - I did very well on this a few years ago - time flies - but when the gym closed, I slowly fell back into bad habits - nagging at myself every day in the back of my mind to get back on track. So that's exactly what I'm going to do.
3. Finances - I've already touched on that. I really need to get organized and get a budget happening! By the way, a big part of that is implementing a filing system and a simple system for processing mail - I suck at it!
4. House - to stay on my BOOST Circuit for the house and keep it nice.
5. Kids - To spend more time really WITH them as opposed to with them if you know what I mean. More time spent having family game nights, taking time out to go "chat", planning special things that have rolled right by me the past years of being too busy.
Yes, you need to know what to do and what you want. If you don't know that, then you do need to spend some time with extreme focus and don't allow yourself to get sidetracked by anything.
I've known these things for years. I planned and plotted but didn't do enough about them, largely because I spent too much planning and learning how instead of just doing them. And getting sidetracked by things I refused to take control over that I really didn't want to spend time on.
THE BUZZWORD FOR 2008 IS DOING WHAT MATTERS - one step at a time.
How about you? What's up for you in 2008?
