When I first saw the recipe, frankly I was skeptical.
A green smoothie?
I could see that should putting spinach in a smoothie work out, it could be just what I was looking for to get a little extra quality greens into my diet.
So I went for it.
And to my surprise, it was fantastic.
At first I was very careful to follow the smoothie recipe to be sure that the spinach didn't somehow become overwhelming and the taste make my face turn, well… green.
But after awhile I started getting adventurous.
I started adding it to almost all of my smoothies.
Other than a change of colour, I barely could tell a difference, except that I had just upped the health quotient by leaps and bounds.
Last night, I knew I had hit the big time.
I have a basic protein drink that I split to drink before and after my workout (I use prograde from Club FYM, it's clean - no artificial sugar and fillers and has a very good nutritional profile).
If I'm late working out, I don't want too many calories or anything too heavy, so I keep it to powder, a bit of rice milk and water.
But last night I had a thought. Why not add some spinach?
So I did. I added a substantial handful of spinach to the last half of my protein drink after my workout.
And it tasted great.
Not really any different than a smoothie without except that it had more substance.
So I will be making it a habit from now on.
Next time your out shopping, grab some baby spinach and don't be shy when you add it to your daily smoothie (if you're not having a daily smoothie, you need to start. They are a powerhouse of nutrition, they taste great and they are quick to make)
You can get a load of smoothie recipes and more from Club Fit Yummy Mummy, that's where I got the original green smoothie recipe.
