Start the day with Protein - Smart Tip #4

For years I started my day with coffee, and a few yours later toast. I could never understand why I always got tired fairly early in the day.
As I learned more about healthy eating, I switched up breakfast for something much healthier.
Almost every day I have plain balkan yogurt, some canned peaches (or other fruit to mix it up, use only canned fruit in juice - not syrup), I grind some nuts or seeds - about 9 almonds, or a about 1 - 2 tablespoons of pumpkins seeds or flax seeds are my usual, sometimes I will use whole cashews instead) and then I sprinkle a bit of my favourite protein powder on for some added flavour and protein boost.
This is just as quick as toast, much healthier and I do not get the energy slump that I used to.
Also, following Holly's advice at Club Fit Yummy Mummy, I eat earlier so that I can rev up my metabolism for the day. This also helps to curtail late night snacking a I can more easily fit in my major munching earlier in the day.

This is some great advice. And like the guy said above, it’s important to eat if you want to lose weight. Adding off of his statement, some girls won’t eat thus they put their body into the stage of ketosis.
When this happens, the body begins to burn your muscle for energy. You lose weight, but most of the weight you lose is muscle, thus, you still end up looking fat.
Not enough people realize that it’s important to eat if you want to lose weight. It’s sad really.

Dieting all the time is HARD..don’t you agree? I really like your approach, where you look at it as eating healthy and substituting healthy alternatives. It makes it sound a lot easier than having to constantly restrict what I eat. Thanks!

I make a high-protein breakfast shake for my son and myself every morning. It’s got oatmeal, frozen banana, frozen strawberries, milk, yogurt, and a couple of huge handfuls of fresh spinach. Spinach is a great source of protein, and you honestly can’t taste it in the shake. It’s great to start off our day with such a healthy drink!

Most people do not eat enough protein when they first wake up in the morning. You body needs it to stop burning muscle! You need a good amount of carbs/protein first thing to get your body working properly . Great article and comments!

I am a believer in high protein intake and less carbohydrates and to be even more healthy, switch the milk to unsweetened soymilk or yogurt containing probiotics (very beneficial for the human digestive system).

I’m so with you on this. I used to drink protein shakes that were made with whey isolate in the morning, but now I’ve switched to eating three egg whites with a handful of some sort of nuts, or a piece of chicken fried up.
And yes… of course I sneak in some bacon now and again!!

What Taylor said is dead on the money. If you eat right, you will lose weight. It’s as simple as that. The hard part is sticking with it. - celeb news

Instead of coffee, I drink orange juice or a glass of milk. And adding a little lean protein to breakfast may be just the boost that we need to help keep feeling full until lunchtime. And a traditional breakfast of eggs may be one of the best ways to get your morning protein. While eggs are not always associated with weight loss, they contain some of the highest-quality protein.

I think people think by not eating breakfest they are skipping extra calories, but it’s so true if you don’t have something that will keep you full you end up being miserable, starving and eating something you wouldn’t have eaten if you weren’t so hungry.
I like the suggestion of pumpkin seeds! I’ve never tried that before, I am a big fan of protein shakes and I eat those for breakfest every morning but I can’t wait to try your suggestion because I’m getting bored of drinking the same thing everyday. Sometimes using a spoon is just what you need.

Good article. It’s the old saying, you are what you eat.
Too many people stop eating when in theory they should be eating more often…just less quantity!

I’m trying to become vegetarians, so not all of this food for me. The best option - bananas, this is my favorite fruit

I totally agree with this. I used to never eat breakfast, but now I eat a big breakfast with eggs and bacon among other things, and now I am a lot healthier

Another healthy idea is to make some oatmeal and mix your protein powder in with the oatmeal. Healthy and delicious.
