Healthy Sugar Substitute

May 17th, 2008 · No Comments

 Smart Tips for Optimum Nutrition

I stumbled upon a healthy substitute for sugar one morning while prying my eyeballs open making breakfast.

I recently started using plain yogurt with fruit and nuts/seeds and protein powder for breakfast instead of the flavoured kind that I had always used.

I made a discovery - it tastes just as good without being overly sweet.

This is great news for me because I am finding it increasingly difficult to find yogurt that isn't sweetened artificially.

Plain yogurt is the number one choice (balkan is amazing -it's thicker than normal plain yogurt - I LOVE it!).

Green Smoothie Recipes

Green Smoothies

When I first saw the recipe, frankly I was skeptical.

A green smoothie?

I could see that should putting spinach in a smoothie work out, it could be just what I was looking for to get a little extra quality greens into my diet.

So I went for it.

And to my surprise, it was fantastic.

At first I was very careful to follow the smoothie recipe to be sure that the spinach didn't somehow become overwhelming and the taste make my face turn, well… green.

Cut Down on Coffee - Smart Tip #5

April 29th, 2008 · No Comments

 Smart Tips for Optimum Nutrition

I struggled with this for years, I could get down to the last morning cup, but that was as good as it got.

Then I got very sick with the flu for about 2 weeks. After that I was cured since I hadn't been able to drink it over those weeks.

So I quit coffee for a year, then for some stupid reason, decided to drink one here and there, then another etc and found myself drinking it again.

The biggest revelation that I had when I started again was the way it affected my nerves and PMS.

The time without coffee I was relatively calm, as soon as I introduced it back, I was a raving lunatic over things that prior wouldn't have bothered me.

Graduation Day at FYM

Weight Loss Challenge Grad

Yesterday marked the end of the 12 week Fit Yummy Mummy Transformational Challenge, but it's really only the beginning.

I spent it quietly euphoric, as it seems the time of year for endings and new beginnings, graduations abound and it was fun to have my own milestone to celebrate.

I had to get pictures but  no one was home to take them until supper time.  I had put lasagna in the oven to celebrate and they weren't hungry because they had eaten at my mil's. No big deal but I ravenous after trying to hold out until after. My daughter took the pictures for me but there was too much sun in the background so I had to retake later.

Alas, I couldn't wait that long! I had two glorious pieces of delicious, mouth watering lasagna, with a bunch of water to wash it down… I find now that I don't eat a lot salt that anything canned with salt (spaghetti sauce for example) makes me thirsty.

Great Strides in Weight Loss - Week 10

April 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

Fitness and Weight Loss Challenge for Moms

This has been an interesting week.

I'm getting back on track in redoubling my efforts. I had fallen into a comfortable state which in one way is a great thing and what we are aiming for - creating new, healthy habits that don't take much effort to implement, because they have become second nature.

But at that point, it is important to make the effort to go a step up, both to keep your momentum and to continue to improve, and to fulfill your potential, no point in maintaining when you can excel, you only live once!

I don't know if I missed a week somehow, but we are doing our pictures and stats for the end of the 12 week challenge this Sunday. So I am going to be especially careful to stick to the plan this week! I'll keep you posted.

MY STATS WEEK 10 - Here are the main numbers that I am looking at…

Start the day with Protein - Smart Tip #4

April 21st, 2008 · No Comments

 Smart Tips for Optimum Nutrition

For years I started my day with coffee, and a few yours later toast. I could never understand why I always got tired fairly early in the day.

As I learned more about healthy eating, I switched up breakfast for something much healthier.

Almost every day I have plain balkan yogurt, some canned peaches (or other fruit to mix it up, use only canned fruit in juice - not syrup), I grind some nuts or seeds - about 9 almonds, or a about 1 - 2 tablespoons of pumpkins seeds or flax seeds are my usual, sometimes I will use whole cashews instead) and then I sprinkle a bit of my favourite protein powder on for some added flavour and protein boost.

This is just as quick as toast, much healthier and I do not get the energy slump that I used to.

Fit Yummy Mummy Stats - Week 9

April 16th, 2008 · No Comments

Fitness and Weight Loss Challenge for Moms

This week my report is going to be a little different.

I shuffled along as usual, but it was not one of my best weeks emotionally, had a few things going on that knocked me off of my game, and was sick for 2 days to boot (coincidence? probably not).

UPSET AND DISCORD CAN BRING YOU DOWN FLAT

I mention this to illustrate how our emotions and the things going on around us can effect our results.

If it happens too often, guess what happens?

Week 8 Stats - Fit Yummy Mummy

April 8th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Fitness and Weight Loss Challenge for Moms

Things at this point seem to be running on almost autopilot, which is I suppose the main idea of a Fit Yummy Mummy lifestyle.

I still have room for improvement as far as adding a few more veggies into my diet and being sure that my meals and snacks are balanced, but all in all, I am finding it a habit to eat much healthier.

I am making an effort to eat cleaner, reducing the main offenders. As it happens, this week I was driving for a day so had the usual coffee and Tim Horton's whole wheat bagel with cream cheese, another coffee at my sister's house to get me home (I was tired! Went with my son to pick up his first truck. It was a monumental day for both of us).

But when I think about it, if my main cheat is an extra coffee, I'm not doing too badly, although I would love to eliminate coffee again at some point. I know at one time in my life, it would have been nothing to have had a large cappuccino and 2 donuts!
